It is long! Been in the industry for a long time.

My name is Carmen and I am a Health Coach and Movement Specialist, with 27 years experience in the Health and Fitness industry.

As a Health Coach, I show women over 35 how to look and feel FABULOUS! So they can feel young, sexy and alive without crazy diets or tons of supplements in little as 90 days!

I have participated in 11 Fitness Competitions since 2007. I have recently decided to retire and focus on creating happiness, contentment and most of all greatness in my life and how I look at myself.

My passion for the fitness industry started when I was 19 years old and I have since dedicated my work to helping people become the best version of themselves.
It is my ultimate mission to motivate, inspire and educate people just like you to get the most out of life and the body you live in. I create custom fitness programs for my clients based on their individual fitness levels lifestyles. goals, needs, and body types.

 

I KNOW IT CAN BE FRUSTRATING, CONFUSING AND OVERWHELMING WHEN YOU WANT TO SEE CHANGE BUT YOU JUST DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START.

When it comes to my personal fitness journey, I have been through it all! Each decade my body changes and how I look at myself changed. Recently going through extreme changes in my body. Hormonal upset, weight gain, bad body image coming off competitions and worse of all feeling defeated in life.

I decided to study Health Coaching not just to help others but to help myself as well. Through the process, I have learned self-acceptance, which is the key to achieving success. Without it you can’t reach your goals. No matter what you do.

It was time for me to get off the roller coaster and start climbing mountains! The view from the top is much better than almost seeing the top and falling back down again! Yes life is not always void of obstacles, but by creating self-acceptance I am able to deal with stress and obstacles in a more positive way!

 

I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU THE SAME TOOLS AND STEPS I USE TO HELP ME STAY STRONG AND FIT.

The last thing I am going to tell you is that this is going to be easy. What I do know is that we all need the tools to overcome life’s curveballs. I have the knowledge and experience to help you get back on track.

I am known to be quirky, raw, honest and to-the-point BUT I promise to keep your fitness journey fun and give it all I’ve got. The idea of being your partner in crime and motivating you truly excites me!

As your coach, I understand that getting started and staying accountable can be one of the most difficult things to do.

Training Plan:

During my prep, 6 lift days. I focus a lot on Shoulders so train them twice per week. Legs are my toughest to come in lean so I don’t over do them and stick to higher reps. This prep I did cardio twice per day most days. In my off season or what I call normal life, I lift 3-4 days a week and do 2-3 conditioning workouts. I find with the higher calories this works best for me. I go down to 3 times a week of regular cardio and no more than 30 mins.

IN MY OFF SEASON OR WHAT I CALL NORMAL LIFE, I LIFT 3-4 DAYS A WEEK AND DO 2-3 CONDITIONING WORKOUTS.

Thoughts on HIIt, Power lifting, TRX, Yoga, bodybuilding, other:

I believe all fitness modalities are valid if you love it and it works for you. If you love what you do, it will show. Results come from consistency. Your passion keeps you consistent. Do what you love and love what you do.

Nutritional & Supplements:

During my prep it is a progressive process and each prep is different. This past one for Nationals 2017, for the last 6 weeks carbs were low and fat low with two refeeds. I didn’t go low the whole prep. Carbs and fat were gradually lowered and cardio gradually added. For supplements, I am very big on all natural products. I used Super Human Strength for protein powders and BCAA’s. This time around I focused on gut health and liver. So I used glutamine, liver detoxifier, magnesium, fiber smart, probiotics, fish oil and super enzymes.

Special skills?

I am a team player and love to see good people succeed and grow! I have a way of making others see the good in themselves and when I managed gyms, I always wanted to see people do better than me. Means I did my job!

What do your parents mean to you? What did they teach you?

My family, in general, mean the world to me. I am very close to my mom especially now after losing my dad 5 years ago and after almost losing her to cancer. They taught me to treat others as equals. To always see the good in others but at the same time not let anyone walk all over me. My mom taught me to be a strong, independent and capable woman.

What separates Status from other fitness magazines?

Status showcases their athletes as strong, sexy and versatile. Status offers many platforms for EVERYONE. Giving them chances to be featured and give them exposure. It is a great magazine for anyone interested in health and fitness. From competitors to anyone looking to start their journey.

What would it mean to you to become the next Status Fitness Cover-model?

I would be over the moon! As a 47 year old fitness model and competitor, this would be a dream come true!

If you could ask Status Editor-In-Chief, Rodney Jang one question what would that be?

What is your vision for the magazine in 5 years. Fitness evolves so fast and just like any business in the industry we all need to change with the times!

What was it like working with Warren from Healthy Vision Photography for publication in Status Fitness Magazine?

Always a pleasure. I have shot with Warren 4 times in the last 6 years. His vision and creativity paired with his great sense of humor and appreciation for fitness, makes models feel at home. My best photos have come from shooting with Warren.

Name six things people would not know about you:

1. I excelled in art when I was younger. Went to college for Interior Design.
2. I am a bit of an introvert.
3. I don’t like many vegetables. So I need to be creative.
4. I was great in track when I was in school. Sprinter.
5. I don’t like horror movies. At all! Scare the hell out of me.
6. Super sensitive. I get very touched easily when I see something amazing. To the point of shedding tears.

I AM A BIT OF AN INTROVERT.

Who inspires you?

So many! But for sure my mom. As tough as things get for her, she always sees the positive and the bright side. This is what helped her beat cancer. Also, The Rock (Dwayne Johnson). His story and things he has overcome make me believe we are all capable of greatness. He continues to motivate millions with his positive attitude and takes care of himself into his mid forties.

Who do you wish to inspire?

Anyone and everyone! Of course others in my age group but also young women who struggle. The times have changed. Young women struggle more than we know. The pressures of living up to “social media” perfection and peer pressure are at an all time high! I keep it real and want young women to get the right messages. It is about progress not perfection.

Transformation story:

I have been in the fitness industry for 27 years. My transformation is more of a mental and professional one. At the age of 45 years old I finally decided to pursue my dream of owning my own business. Quit my job and started from scratch. I had to move in with my mom and could barely make ends meet. I kept my head high and pushed forward with dedication and determination. I was able to get my business to a place where I could feel comfortable again. It is still a work in progress but I went from hitting bottom to rising back up. Not easy to do but sometimes hitting bottom forces you to become something better. Today I am back in school for health coaching and still have a dream of owning my own studio.

Life goals:

Own my own studio and health coaching business. I want to help people on a different level. Above and beyond workouts and meal plans.

THE PRESSURES OF LIVING UP TO “SOCIAL MEDIA” PERFECTION AND PEER PRESSURE ARE AT AN ALL TIME HIGH!

Name five lessons you have learned:

1. We are all equal.
2. We must embrace aging and change our approach to health and fitness as our bodies change.
3. In order to be happy we must first love who we are.
4. You are never too old for anything.
5. We all have purpose. Each and every one of us have the ability to make a difference.

Music and artist you listen while training:

I listen to a lot of Hip Hop and R&B while training. Right now some of my fav artists are Drake and Kendrick Lamar. But I do change my fav jams up! Right now I am loving Issues by Julia Michaels.

Favorite actors/ movies:

Favorite movies are Hidden Figures, American History X and Straight out of Compton. Love movies with strong messages.

Favorite books and authors:

I read of a lot books on Health and business. In all honesty I don’t really have a favorite. All of them bring a different perspective and provide relevant information. I use everything good and bad to become better at what I do.

You have competed with several organizations. Can you tell us about your competitive fitness journey?

I started competing in 2007. I never thought I was capable of changing my body enough to step on stage, but I did. Once I did one, I was hooked. 9 ½ years later I started with OPA and love it! I feel like I am part of a family and never thought I could get to a National level within a year at 46 years old. I have been a pro in another organization and met so many amazing like minded people that are now a huge part of my life.

I decided to start with the OPA for a different experience. My first comp with then was Fouad Open May 2016 where I took overall in Masters Figure. I also placed 3rd in Open figure. In june of 2016 I did Ontario Provincials at the Toronoto Pro Show. I placed 2nd in both masters and open figure for my class. I decided to skip nationals that year so I could improve my physique and glad I did. This past July I placed 2nd in Masters figure over 45 and 6th in Open figure. Best physique to date.

Can you talk about your view on over 40 females in the fitness industry who are inspiring and motivating other women to lead an active lifestyle?

The over 40 females in the fitness industry bring experience and a dedicated view. It isn’t about how they look it is about how they feel and can give advice based on their ups and downs, their challenges and experience. To see women over 40 doing well and leading by example motivates me more anything! Each decade our approach to health and fitness has to change and evolve. We must embrace this change and learn from it. This is why these females are able to help so many people! They get it!
